After the flooding and damages from Hurricane Harvey at Kingwood High School, the school was shut down, disrupting the school year and displacing over 2,700 students to schools throughout Humble ISD.
The project team led by architectural firm, PBK and the highly experienced engineers at Walter P. Moore, designed a comprehensive passive flood protection system that included 16 passive automatic FloodBreak flood gates at entrances. Having worked with FloodBreak on numerous other projects, including many that were protected during other Houston floods, the engineers knew that the gates would meet the project requirements for long term reliability, ease of use and building access.
Our floodgates were chosen to integrate with the other components of their flood protection solution. A total of 16 passive automatic floodgates were designed into the various entry points including vestibules with architectural treatments to match the building aesthetics.
This customer requested that the flood barriers be equipped with an optional Pusb Button Lift System, totally independent of the passive operation, which allows for quick and ease deployment with a simple touch of a button.

During unexpected heavy rains in 2024, the flood barriers deployed automatically and protected the school from flood inundation.
