Acqualina Resort & Residences, situated in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, just north of Miami Beach faced ongoing risk from flooding due to its proximity to the ocean and the region’s susceptibility to hurricanes and storm surges. The resort required a reliable flood protection solution to safeguard its facilities but also provide 24/7 access.

Background

Acqualina Resort & Residences has faced persistent flood challenges posed by their location on the beach. In 2014, they looked for a passive flood barrier to protect their service dock and guest parking.  Acqualina turned to FloodBreak for their proven, passive automatic flood barrier system to eliminate the need for facilities personnel to deploy and to protect against flash floods.

Solution

A 23’x3′ passive automatic floodgate was designed to meet the unique requirements of Acqualina Resort & Residences.  The entrance to the parking garage & service entry is heavily used but also vulnerable to street flooding. It has to remain open around the clock but also protect against unexpected flood events.

Acqualina management has taken a proactive approach to ensure that they are always protected and has FloodBreak personnel perform an annual inspection. The FloodBreak team performs a 21-point inspection and certifies that the gate is “flood ready”. To minimize inconvenience to resort guests, the work is performed late at night when traffic is minimal.

Results

The installation of FloodBreak’s automatic floodgate system at Acqualina Resort & Residences has given management, employees and guest peace of mind that they are protected from flood damage.

The flood barrier has deployed numerous times during localized street flooding and is ready 24/7 for future coastal storms regardless of when they might hit.
