Cummins Inc., a prominent US & Canada-based company, is renowned for delivering clean power solutions, encompassing engines, generators, power systems, components, parts, and services. In June 2008, Cummins faced a significant challenge when a devastating flood hit Columbus, Indiana, severely affecting two of its critical locations. As they quickly rebuilt and recovered internally, they added to their flood mitigation strategy by incorporating 5 of our automatic floodgates at two of their locations in 2013.

Background

The Columbus Flood of 2008 was a result of a thunderstorm that brought heavy rainfall to the entire Central Indiana region. The water levels exceeded those of the historic Great Flood of 1913, causing widespread damage and posing significant recovery and rebuilding challenges for many businesses and communities. Cummins Inc., estimates that flood damages to its four affected sites exceeded $100 million.

The basement levels of the Tech Center’s lab and office buildings, located along a bend in Haw Creek, were completely submerged, with up to three feet of standing water on the first floors. This flooding caused extensive damage to power substations and sensitive equipment, including electronic systems and the fiber optic network. The catastrophic impact demanded a permanent and reliable solution to prevent such damage in the future and safeguard the company’s vital infrastructure, personnel, and equipment.

Solution

In response to the severe flood damage, Cummins Inc. implemented a comprehensive flood prevention strategy to protect its facilities from future flooding events. This solution involved the installation of five FloodBreak automatic floodgates, designed to remain hidden in plain sight until activated by rising floodwaters.

These passive flood barriers automatically deploy in the event of flooding, without the need for human intervention or power sources. This feature is particularly critical for ensuring timely and reliable protection during unexpected flood events. By investing in this cutting-edge technology, Cummins aimed to fortify its infrastructure and mitigate the risk of future flood damage.

By proactively addressing the risks associated with flooding, Cummins has demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding its assets, employees, and community. Over a decade later and our fully passive automatic floodgates protect the perimeter of these two Cummins locations.
