In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey brought record-breaking rainfall to Southeast Texas, causing catastrophic flooding across the region and damaging thousands of homes and businesses. The Dickinson Jack in the Box was among the properties heavily impacted, sustaining extensive flood damage that left the restaurant inoperable for years until its rebuilding began in 2025. Recognizing that future hurricanes and flooding events remain a persistent threat, the owners sought out a passive automatic solution to help protect the property from the type of flood damage that shut down their business after Harvey.
This project included the installation of four FloodBreak automatic pedestrian floodgates designed to activate passively when floodwaters rise – providing dependable protection with no people and no power required. The floodgates remain concealed during normal operations, preserving the appearance and accessibility of the restaurant while providing 24/7 passive flood protection. Each gate was custom designed to fit the facility’s four entryways and engineered to meet the floodproofing requirements established for the 2026 rebuild.
