When it comes to flood protection, assurance that the flood barriers will deploy when needed is paramount. FloodBreak’s Automatic Floodgate system is 100% passive operation, requiring no human intervention or external power source to deploy during flooding events. You’re protected 24/7. The FloodBreak Automatic Floodgate system revolutionized flood mitigation. But what if you could add even more flexibility to this already robust system? Enter the Optional Hydraulic Lift—a feature that offers the convenience of raising your floodgate at the push of a button, while preserving the core benefits of FloodBreak’s passive design.
What Is the Optional Hydraulic Lift?
The Hydraulic Lift is an optional feature designed to complement FloodBreak’s Automatic Floodgate system. It is composed of premium mechanical and hydraulic components that raise the gate into position quickly and easily with no tools or equipment, no matter the size.
The system fits under the gate in a flat package and requires only a slightly deeper set-down to accommodate the cylinders, lifting arms, and mountings. The hydraulic power unit (HPU) is located separately with conduits routed to the gate. The system can be operated by a single operator at the gate location or controlled electrically from a central station. Monitoring sensors and control outputs for barricades, warnings, or other safety equipment are available.
Benefits of the Optional Hydraulic Lift
- Retains Passive Protection: The hydraulic lift system is decoupled from the passive operation, so the floodgate remains fully operational without the need for power or human intervention. This ensures your infrastructure is protected 24/7, even during unexpected flood events.
- Enhanced Flexibility: The hydraulic lift offers the option for manual deployment ahead of anticipated flooding events, giving you more control over when and how the system is activated.
- More Convenient Maintenance: Annual maintenance is even easier by eliminating the need for lifting equipment. A simple push of a button lifts the gate to enable a crew to perform the scheduled inspection and cleaning. Upon completion, another touch of the button lowers the gate to its hidden position.
- Deployment at the Moment of the Flood: No longer must standard operating procedures require closing entrances/exits ahead of an actual flood event. The hydraulic system even operates with flood waters present, eliminating decision risk incumbent when making pre-event judgement calls.
Notable Projects
Many FloodBreak customers have added the optional lift system including various high-profile projects.
Safeguarding MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas
The MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas is a world leader in cancer treatment and research facilities. Since 2004, FloodBreak’s floodgates have been providing passive flood protection for this essential lifeline institution, with over 30 floodgates installed around the campus perimeter at vulnerable entry points. In recent years, the facility has retrofitted a dozen of these flood barriers with the hydraulic lift option to allow facility personnel to raise the gates for operating procedures and periodic maintenance.
Protecting Water Treatment Plant in Blair, Nebraska
In 2015, a 38’x6’ FloodBreak floodgate with the hydraulic lift option was installed to safeguard a water treatment plant in Blair, Nebraska. This installation was critical in providing a berm closure that allowed the continued operation of a local two-lane road while protecting the plant from potential flood damage. The hydraulic lift feature played a crucial role in this project, offering the flexibility needed to deploy the floodgate instantly, on call, ensuring the uninterrupted operation of essential water treatment services. A showcase video of this installation demonstrates the effectiveness of the hydraulic lift in real-world scenarios, highlighting its value in protecting vital infrastructure.
