Bulleit Distilling, a prominent stop on Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail®, built a $115 million facility in Shelbyville, KY, integrating advanced sustainability with the county’s first industrial solar panel array. FloodBreak’s passive automatic barriers were installed across 8 warehouses to safeguard against floodwater and internal spills, ensuring continuous operations and sustainability efforts.

Background

Bulleit Distilling is a 300-acre property in Shelbyville, KY that produces Bulleit Bourbon along with several other whiskies. It is a stop on the historic Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, a string of bourbon distilleries throughout the state. The $115 million facility which includes an impressive visitor center finished construction in late 2017 and has been open for public visits since 2019.

The distillery is equipped with the latest technology and was built with sustainability as one of its imperatives. It currently employs the first industrial solar panel array in Shelby County, strong enough to power all of Bulleit’s on-site mobile equipment.

Solution

FloodBreak’s passive automatic technology supports sustainability. There is no need for people or an external power source for it to operate.

Results

FloodBreak’s passive automatic barriers were installed as containment gates at 8 different warehouses during the distillery’s ongoing expansion. As suggested, these barriers would seal off any of the warehouses should an internal spill occur. Floodwater is what typically deploys our barriers. However, any flow will float up the barrier, even bourbon!
