The International School of Tanganyika (IST), established in 1963, is a private, not-for-profit day school located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, serving students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. To safeguard its campuses from recurrent flooding, IST implemented FloodBreak’s automatic flood barrier systems at both its Upanga and Dar es Salaam locations.

Background

Education is a cornerstone of community development, and protecting institutions like IST is vital for societal progress. Schools serve as not only places of learning but also as community hubs that foster growth, opportunity, and resilience. FloodBreak recognizes the importance of protecting these institutions to ensure uninterrupted learning and the preservation of valuable resources that support students, faculty, and the broader community.

When IST first opened its Dar es Salaam campus, the school quickly experienced recurring flooding, posing risks to campus infrastructure and daily operations. Recognizing the urgent need for a reliable, long-term flood protection solution, IST partnered with FloodBreak to install automatic flood barriers in 2016. These floodgates provided such effective protection that when similar flooding concerns arose at the Upanga campus in 2024, IST once again turned to FloodBreak for a proven, maintenance-free solution.

Solution

Flooding had been a persistent issue for IST, disrupting operations and putting valuable educational resources at risk. To address these challenges, FloodBreak floodgates were installed, providing seamless flood protection without requiring external power or manual operation. These barriers remain hidden under normal conditions and automatically deploy when floodwaters rise, offering a permanent solution.

FloodBreak worked closely with IST to develop floodgates for each campus’s needs:

  • Dar es Salaam Campus (May 2016) – This location had been experiencing multiple flooding events per year, threatening school operations and campus safety. To provide reliable protection, the following floodgates were installed:

    • Two pedestrian floodgates measuring 3.3 ft x 2 ft each, securing key entry points.
    • One vehicle floodgate measuring 9.8 ft x 2 ft, ensuring protection for vehicular access areas.
  • Upanga Campus (2024) – As part of IST’s ongoing expansion and commitment to campus resilience, additional flood protection measures were implemented at its Upanga location. This included:

    • Three vehicle floodgates, each measuring 11.5 ft x 2.6 ft, safeguarding critical driveways and preventing floodwaters from entering the campus.

Results

By installing FloodBreak’s permanent, self-activating floodgates, IST now benefits from a low-maintenance, cost-effective flood protection system designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. These solutions allow the school to focus on its core mission—educating and empowering students—without the recurring threat of flood-related disruptions.

The implementation of FloodBreak’s floodgates has provided IST with a range of long-term benefits, including:

  • Automatic Deployment – Floodgates activate with rising water levels, requiring no human intervention or power.
  • Continuous & Permanent Protection – Ensures 24/7 readiness against unexpected flooding events.
  • Preservation of Educational Activities – Prevents disruptions to academic programs and protects campus facilities.
  • Cost Efficiency – Reduces potential flood damage costs and eliminates the need for manual flood defenses.
  • Architectural Integration – The floodgates remain hidden when not in use, preserving the aesthetics and functionality of the campus.

By choosing FloodBreak’s state-of-the-art flood protection solutions, the International School of Tanganyika has taken a proactive step in securing its campuses against future flooding, ensuring a safe and stable learning environment for students and staff.
