In September 2025, Kruger Energy installed a custom FloodBreak passive automatic vent system at its hydroelectric power plant in Quebec. This passive horizontal flood vent is 72″ x 72″ and is the first of its kind in Canada, marking a major milestone in the protection of critical energy infrastructure against flood risk.

Background

Kruger Energy was searching for permanent flood protection for a ventilation hatch located at the lowest level of the hydroelectric dam. They needed to protect the renewable energy plant from flooding during a potential century flood at Bromptonville, QC.

Solution

The FloodBreak horizontal vent was designed in concert with Kruger Energy personnel to meet their site-specific requirements:

  • Custom-sized and designed to provide permanent, 24/7 flood protection.
  • Built using proven passive automatic technology & eliminating the need for manual deployment.
  • Minimized airflow disruption. Only panels affected by the water will rise, leaving much of the opening intact in partial flood events.
  • Designed for ease of installation.

The FloodBreak Horizontal Vent system ensures uninterrupted flood protection around the clock while allowing continuous airflow until an actual flood event.
