New York City flooding from record-breaking rainfall (CNN, 2023)
With record-breaking rainfall and hurricanes, ongoing events can be unpredictable and often give very little to no reaction time, so being prepared is extremely crucial to protecting people and property. In the last two months, coast to coast there was significant, unexpected flash flooding, leaving communities and businesses heavily impacted.
Most recently, New York declared a state of emergency as record-breaking rainfall caused flash flooding, shutting down subway lines, overpowering the streets, and leaving many communities extremely vulnerable and damaged. Our customers in the area were dry & happy.
On August 16th in Southern California, Hurricane Hilary was the first tropical storm to hit since 1939. Classified as a Category 1 Hurricane, Hurricane Hilary had approximately $600 million in privately insured losses, which included residential, commercial, and industrial properties (Karen Clark & Company, 2023). This event was unexpected and unusual, leaving many unprepared. Seen in the picture below is a FloodBreak floodgate from January 2023 in Santa Monica, CA at the Laguna Treatment Plant.

Another recent example on August 24th was Hurricane Idalia in North Florida, classified as a Category 4 hurricane. Idalia was the most powerful hurricane to hit Florida’s Big Bend region since the 1896 Cedar Keys Hurricane. Declaring a state of emergency in over 50 counties, many families and businesses were evacuated, destroyed, and displaced. Florida is a state that focuses on being prepared for disasters, as was evident at Everglades City School in Collier County, where FEMA funding enabled protection by 5 FloodBreak floodgates during Hurricane Ian in 2022.
Investing in automatic flood protection is essential as it prevents the need to rebuild after unexpected flash flooding and extreme weather conditions. And once our flood barriers are installed, they will protect for a lifetime!
