Progress continues across multiple Coastal Resiliency projects that make up the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency (LMCR) program, an ambitious initiative protecting New York City’s most iconic waterfront spaces — and the entirety of Lower Manhattan –- from storm surge and rising sea levels.
At FloodBreak, we’re proud to contribute our engineering expertise in flood protection systems to these critical efforts, helping shape the future of resilient design in New York City and beyond.
The LMCR Vision
The LMCR program unites a network of interconnected projects to form a comprehensive line of defense around Lower Manhattan.
These include:
- Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resilience (BMCR)
- Battery Park City Resiliency (BPCR) – Elevating and protecting Battery Park City, including key community landmarks like Wagner Park, Pier A Plaza, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage.
Together, these initiatives combine engineering innovation, urban design, and community access to keep the city and its waterfront open, safe, and vibrant.
BMCR Progress: Steady Advances in Flood Protection Integration
The BMCR project continues to move forward, featuring FloodBreak’s innovative flip-up floodgate systems designed for reliability, strength, and integration into public spaces.
Recent BMCR milestones:
✅ 52 of 89 floodgates delivered and installed
✅ 8 of 24 hydraulic power units (HPUs) delivered to the site
✅ Gate heights range up to 12’6” to accommodate unique site elevations
These systems strengthen New York’s southernmost waterfront while preserving open space and public access.
Wagner Park Reopens: Innovation in Flood Resilience
The reopening of Wagner Park in July marked a major milestone in the Battery Park City Resiliency Project and a proud moment for FloodBreak.
Our flood barriers are included in the integrated flood risk management system protecting the park, remaining hidden until needed to defend against storm surge. This design keeps Wagner Park open, inviting, and accessible every day, while providing robust protection when the city needs it most.
As featured in media coverage, Wagner Park represents the future of resilient waterfront design, a balance of safety, beauty, and community experience.
